Business Card Design Checklist

Keep contact details readable while using stock, finish and layout to support the brand rather than crowd the card.

Make the information hierarchy obvious

A business card has limited space. Give the name or company the strongest position, then organise the role and contact methods underneath. Remove information that will not help the recipient take the next step.

Keep the brand consistent

Use approved logo files and colour references. Small printed areas can reveal differences that look less obvious on a screen, so avoid introducing extra shades only for the card.

Choose stock before decorative finish

Coated, uncoated, textured and kraft stocks each change colour and fine detail. Lamination can add protection or alter the feel. Foil and spot gloss work best as controlled accents with enough spacing from fine text and cut edges.

PVC cards are a separate route when rigidity, water resistance or card functions such as numbering and signature panels matter.

Prepare the artwork correctly

  1. Use a vector PDF, AI or EPS file where possible.
  2. Outline or package fonts.
  3. Add bleed beyond the cut line.
  4. Keep critical text inside the safe area.
  5. Supply separate layers for foil, spot gloss or white ink.
  6. Identify the front and back clearly.

Review the physical result

Check text size, contrast, corner treatment and finish placement at actual size. A clean card with fewer well-controlled elements is usually easier to read and remember.
